Role Summary
The Protection and Controls Engineer must have a broad knowledge of electrical utility experience, engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience and education. They are required to have a strong technical background in protection & controls for switching stations and substations to develop and implement designs for existing and new transmission and distribution projects. They must have knowledge of short circuit studies, relay setting calculations and database files is needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Able to provide P&C design for electrical utility projects for distribution and transmission voltages for switching stations and substations from 4kV up to and including 500kV.
• Proficient in working independently on the following P&C drawings: one line control diagrams, tripping tables, relay protection and control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, racks and panels views, wiring diagrams, control building layouts, cable schedules and bill of materials.
• Coordinate design with electrical layout designers and engineers, construction supervisors, commissioning engineers, and field personnel.
• Experienced in calculating application requirements for AC and DC load banks, battery banks, etc.
• Provide guidance and Quality reviews of P&C designs done by junior designers and/or contractors.
• Provide technical expertise to the project teams, contractors, clients, vendors, management, and construction personnel.
• Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation related to P&C design.
• Lead a team of designers on large scale complex projects and actively participate in technical discussions with clients and utility providers as needed on a per project basis.
• Proven working experience with engineering and design of microprocessor relays for transmission and distribution lines, busses, transformers, PARs, reactors, capacitors for switching stations and substations ranging from 4kV to 500kV.
• Deep knowledge of controls schemes of high voltage breakers, GIS, high voltage equipment monitoring and SCADA.
• Extensive knowledge of performing short circuit studies and relay coordination studies using ETAP and/or ASPEN. Calculating relay settings and programming SEL, GE and other Vendor relay database files
Qualifications and Skills
• B.S in Electrical Engineering or higher degree considered an asset
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, licenses to practice in other provinces considered an asset
• At least 10-15 years of electrical utility switching stations/substations experience and knowledge of electrical stations equipment, e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, gas insulated stations (GIS), regulators, capacitor banks, fiber optic communication, and their protection & controls.
• Candidate must possess a proficient knowledge and experience with protective relay schemes and applications, fiber optic communication, SCADA, metering, A.C & D.C power distribution and controls, alarms, fiber optic communication and equipment monitoring systems
• Proven history of working on complex one-line control schematics, schematics for protective relays (including microprocessor relays), alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits, etc.
• Must have the ability to prioritize tasks in support of project requirements
• Clear understanding of electrical layout drawings in order to effectively support projects.
• Clear and concise writing and excellent verbal communications skills.
• Be an active participant and contributor to improvements in standards and design processes
• Train and Mentor junior staff in technical matters related to design and relay settings.
• Proficient in use of ASPEN and/or ETAP and/or CYME
